Are free Epic games really free?

Yes, really. Epic's weekly free games cost nothing, need no card or subscription, and stay in your library forever. Here's what Epic gets out of it, the real limits, and how to avoid fake giveaways. Free right now: Sorry We're Closed, Gladiator: Blades of Fury, Balloon Strike.

Updated . We check every morning.

Short answer

Yes. Epic's weekly free games cost $0 and are yours to keep forever once you click Get and place the $0 order. You don't need a credit card or a subscription, only a free Epic Games account. The 'catch' is on Epic's side: it pays developers for the giveaway to bring people to its store and launcher.

🤔 So what's the catch?

  • No payment details. A free game checks out as a $0.00 order. You can claim without saving a card.
  • No subscription. Unlike Prime Gaming or Game Pass, nothing expires if you stop paying anything (compare: Prime games).
  • You keep it. A claimed game stays in your library even after the giveaway ends (do you keep free Epic games forever?).
  • What Epic gets: new accounts, launcher installs and attention for its store. Epic pays the developers, so the studio gets paid too (why Epic gives away free games).
  • The real limits: it's free only during the window (usually Thursday 10 AM CT to the next Thursday), you need the Epic launcher to play, and some free games push paid DLC or in-game shops.

⚠️ Avoid fake "free Epic game" scams

  • Only claim on store.epicgames.com or in the Epic launcher. Epic never asks for a code, a survey or a download from another site.
  • If checkout shows anything above $0.00, it's not the giveaway (often it's a paid edition or DLC). Pick the base game.
  • Not sure it's real? Check this week's free Epic games.
