Where to get free PC games

The legit places to get free PC games you keep are the stores themselves: Epic, Steam, GOG and itch.io, plus giveaway keys from key sites. Here's how each one works, how to stay safe, and everything that's free to keep today: 20 games.

Updated . We check every morning.

Short answer

The legit places are the stores themselves: the Epic Games Store (new free games every Thursday at 10 AM CT), Steam (occasional 100% off promos you add to your account), GOG (giveaways on its homepage), and itch.io (developers' own 100% off sales), plus giveaway keys from key sites like IndieGala. Claim the game during the free window and it stays in your library. Free to keep right now: 20 games, including Project Malice, Buckler 2, Sorry We're Closed + more.

🏪 Where free-to-keep PC games come from

  • Epic Games Store: one or more free games every week, swapped Thursdays at 10 AM CT. Sign in, click Get, then Place Order at $0.00 (how to claim, what's next).
  • Steam: now and then a game goes 100% off for a few days. Click Add to Account and you keep it. Free weekends and free-to-play games are different: you don't keep a free weekend game (how to claim).
  • GOG: occasional giveaways from a banner on the GOG homepage, DRM-free with offline installers (how to claim).
  • itch.io: indie developers run their own 100% off sales. Claim it to keep it on your account (how to claim).
  • Key sites: IndieGala and similar sites give away Steam keys or DRM-free copies. Redeem a Steam key under Activate a Product on Steam.
  • On your phone: you can claim Epic PC freebies from a phone browser too (how).

🧭 Free to keep vs free to play

  • Free to keep: a paid game that's free for a short window. Claim it in time and it's yours for good (do you keep them?).
  • Free to play: always free, like Fortnite or Warframe, usually with in-game purchases. Nothing to claim.
  • Free weekends and demos: you can play for a while, but the game isn't added to your library.

🛡️ How to stay safe

  • Claim only on the store's own site or launcher. A real giveaway never asks for a card number; the order total is $0.00.
  • Skip "free download" sites that offer paid games outside a store. Those are cracked copies, not giveaways, and often carry malware.
  • Be careful with cheap keys from resellers. Publishers can revoke keys that weren't sold through an authorized store.

FAQ

Where can I get free PC games legally?

The legit places are the stores themselves: the Epic Games Store (new free games every Thursday at 10 AM CT), Steam (occasional 100% off promos you add to your account), GOG (giveaways on its homepage), and itch.io (developers' own 100% off sales), plus giveaway keys from key sites like IndieGala. Claim the game during the free window and it stays in your library. Free to keep right now: 20 games, including Project Malice, Buckler 2, Sorry We're Closed + more.

Do you get to keep free PC games?

Yes, for giveaways. If you claim a free-to-keep game on Epic, Steam, GOG or itch.io during its free window, it stays in your library after the offer ends. Free weekends and demos are not yours to keep.

What day does Epic give away free games?

Every Thursday. The new free games unlock at 10 AM CT (11 AM ET, 8 AM PT), when the previous week's games stop being free.

Are free game sites safe?

Store giveaways are safe: you claim them on the Epic, Steam, GOG or itch.io site itself and pay $0.00. Avoid sites offering paid games as free downloads outside a store, which are cracked copies.

How do I find out when a PC game goes free?

FreeGG checks every store each morning and sends one free email with every free-to-keep PC game, its store and when it ends.
