Short answer
When a developer puts a paid itch.io game on a 100% off sale, open the game's page while you're signed in and click "Download or claim", then choose to claim it. The game is added to your itch.io library for good, with access to future updates. If the button only says "Download", the developer didn't turn on claiming: you can download the files during the sale, but the game isn't added to your account. Free on itch.io right now: Project Malice, Buckler 2, Roseblight.

🪜 How to claim a free itch.io game
- Sign in to itch.io, or make a free account. Claiming adds the game to your account, so you need to be logged in.
- Open the game's page from FreeGG's free games list and check the price shows as 100% off (or $0).
- Click Download or claim, then pick the option to claim it. You don't need a payment card.
- Check your itch.io library to make sure the game is there before the sale ends.
Claim first, download later. Once it's claimed, you can download it any time from your library.
🔑 Claimed vs just downloaded
- Claimed: itch.io adds a download key to your account. The game stays in your library and you get its updates (itch.io: claimable sales).
- Only downloaded: itch.io's docs say downloading a free project doesn't create a key, so you don't own it on your account (itch.io docs: download keys). Keep the files you downloaded, because you can't re-download from your library later.
- Free-to-play or pay-what-you-want games aren't giveaways. They're always free to download, and you can usually add them to a collection.
Most itch.io games are DRM-free, so a downloaded copy keeps running without a launcher.
⚖️ itch.io vs Epic vs Steam vs GOG freebies
- itch.io: indie developers run their own 100% off sales, usually short and unannounced.
- Epic: new free games every Thursday at 10 AM CT (how to claim).
- Steam: free-to-keep promos and giveaway keys (how to claim).
- GOG: occasional DRM-free giveaways (how to claim).

FAQ
How do I claim free itch.io games?
When a developer puts a paid itch.io game on a 100% off sale, open the game's page while you're signed in and click "Download or claim", then choose to claim it. The game is added to your itch.io library for good, with access to future updates. If the button only says "Download", the developer didn't turn on claiming: you can download the files during the sale, but the game isn't added to your account. Free on itch.io right now: Project Malice, Buckler 2, Roseblight.
Do I keep free itch.io games forever?
Yes, if you claimed it. itch.io says anyone who claims a game during a claimable sale permanently has it in their library, with access to all updates.
Why does the itch.io button only say Download?
The developer didn't enable claiming for that sale. You can still download the files while it's free, but no download key is created, so the game won't stay in your library. Keep the files you downloaded.
Do I need an itch.io account to get free games?
To claim a game into your library, yes, and it's free. Without an account you can sometimes download during the sale, but you won't own it on itch.io.
Where can I find free itch.io games?
itch.io giveaways are run by individual developers and aren't announced on a schedule. FreeGG checks every morning and lists free itch.io, Epic, Steam and GOG games in a free daily email.
